Rev. Ruth Tabrah ... The late Ruth Tabrah was a well known writer and longtime Shin Buddhist. She was an active member of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and president of the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists.

Welcoming Address -- Rev. Tabrah's essay was given as a welcoming address to the Conference on Buddhism and Leadership for Peace, held at the University of Hawaii, and sponsored by the Dae Won Sa Buddhist Temple and the Department of Philosophy at the University. She was particularly interested in the relationship of Buddhism and science and how the alliance of the two areas of knowledge and experience may assist in the solution of modern problems.

Essay on Birth of Americanized Buddhism: Yemyo Imamura -- A scholarly summary of the Ph.D. thesis of Dr. Moriya Tomoe of Meiji Gakuin University, presenting the historical and religious significance of Yemyo Imamura, the second Bishop of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission in Hawaii, from 1900-32. He developed Buddhism along democratic lines and separated from the nationalist ideology that was forming in Japan. He criticized the nativist approach to democracy in America as well. He is seen as an early expression of socially-engaged Buddhism current today.

An Analysis of ‘Shinranism in Mahayana Buddhism and the Modern World’ -- by Rev. Michihiro Ama, Higashi Hongwanji Mission, USA.

"Kaishin" (The Open Spirit) -- Soga Ryojin was an important Higashi Honganji scholar with great influence on modern Shin thought. This example of his work is the start of a new journal in the pre-war period.

Soga Ryojin: The Savior in this World -- An exploration of the meaning of Dharmakara Bodhisattva as the foundation of Shin salvation theory.

Enlightenment for Ordinary People -- By Daiei Kaneko. Kaneko was another foremost Shin thinker in the Higashi Honganji tradition.

Rennyo the Restorer -- by Kaneko Daiei. A summary biography of Rennyo Shonin.

Message and Medium -- by Kaneko Daiei. A lecture positioning the Nembutsu in relation to prayer, zazen, and principles of religion. The lecture is entitled "Shutairon" (subjectivity). It is a defense of Nembutsu in the context of Buddhism and religion in general.

D.T. Suzuki, Certain Views on Shinshu -- D.T. Suzuki was very interested in Shin Buddhism toward the end of his life. He wrote numerous essays and translated all but the final volume of the "Kyogyoshinsho," Shinran's major work.

Hisamatsu Shin'ichi, Critique of Shin Buddhism -- A noted Zen scholar and teacher presents his view of Shin Buddhism and its meaning.

Reflections -- A lecture discussing modern Shinshu figures, including Kiyozawa Manshi, D. T. Suzuki, Soga Ryojin, and Kaneko Daiei.
